My Boss is Going to Hell or Jail: A Survival Guide for Grant Professionals
My Boss is Going to Hell or Jail: A Survival Guide for Grant Professionals
July 18, 2023 1:00 PM 2:40 PM Platinum Ballroom
The boss has done it again, making a questionable decision that is likely to lead to tons of questions by the auditor—or the Inspector General. What to do, what to do?! Tell someone? Keep quiet? Ask the boss? The CFO? Bury your head in the sand or start a new career at McDonald’s? We’ll use a bit of humor to address the issues of everyday ethics and job security we face when decision-making turns ugly.
In our brains and hearts, we know bosses and clients generally are not crooks. They are leaders who do good work. So why do we seem to doubt their actions at every turn? In our session, we’ll discuss the laugh-so-you-don’t-cry moments that arise as our bosses and clients do things we believe, think, know, or feel are not quite ethical or legal. We will examine case studies of real missteps (or miscommunications?) between bosses, grant pros, and stakeholders and the very real consequences of each one. Then, we’ll provide specific and professional steps to help us carefully work our way through this very common minefield. Participants will learn when to talk to the boss and when/how to simply get more information about the matter.
This session is recommended for all attendees. No prerequisites for attendance exist, and no advanced preparation is required. The program level is basic. Attendees can earn up to 2.0 hour of CPE credit in the field of specialized knowledge (nonprofits and government).
