Grants Management Management & GovernanceMelanie Lockwood Herman, Esq., has served as Executive Director of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center since 1996. Melanie has held senior management positions in the nonprofit sector since 1987. She is also the former head of the Legal Section of ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership and a former member of the inaugural Not-For-Profit Advisory Committee of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (2010-2012).
In August 2023, Melanie was named to The NonProfit Times Power & Influence Top 50. The list’s editor has described her as “the most in-demand expert in the nonprofit risk field…” as well as “the architect of the risk plans of some of the nation’s largest nonprofits.” This is Melanie’s fifteenth appearance on the Power & Influence Top 50.
A prolific author of more than a dozen comprehensive books and resource guides on various risk management topics, Melanie has delivered countless workshops and keynote presentations for organizations simply unwilling to leave success to chance. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Urban Affairs from American University (Washington, DC) and a Juris Doctor from George Mason University (Arlington, VA). Melanie is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association.
